James L. Mullins

Dean of Libraries

Purdue's dean of libraries, James L. Mullins, has over 30 years of library experience. He comes to Purdue after three-and-a-half years at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he was associate director for administration of the libraries. Prior to MIT he was university librarian and director at Falvey Memorial Library, Villanova University, director of library services at Indiana University South Bend, and prior to that associate law librarian, IU Bloomington.

A native of Iowa, Dean Mullins received his bachelor's degree in religion and history and his master's degree in library science from the University of Iowa. He received his doctorate in library administration, with a minor in higher education/law, from Indiana University.

As a published authority and an American Library Association member, Dean Mullins has influenced and helped revise the practices and standards for college libraries nationally and internationally through the International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA).

His vision for Purdue Libraries includes enhancing services and resources, and involving Purdue in the discussions on scholarly communication now taking place at universities throughout the world. He is also encouraging the Libraries’ faculty to collaborate on interdisciplinary sponsored research initiatives with colleagues in colleges/schools throughout Purdue.
