Purdue University Libraries: Student Job Description

Introduction: The Purdue University Libraries consists of 14 school and departmental libraries and the Hicks Undergraduate Library which serves the University and the public at large. Resources of the libraries consist of a print collection of more than 2,200,000 volumes and 2,000,000 microforms. The libraries receive approximately 20,000 serials titles including periodicals and serials publications of societies, institutions, and the federal and state governments. Resources are supplemented by the 3,000,000 items of research materials held by the Center for Research Libraries in Chicago. The library collections and services of the Big Ten libraries, the University of Chicago, Ball State University, and Indiana State University are also available.

Staff totals more than 200, including 60 faculty and professionals, plus over 265 student support positions who assist in collection development, collection acquisitions, collection maintenance, collection access, public service activities and special projects.

Responsibilities: Responsibilities will vary dependent upon the mission of each employing Library department or unit. Typical responsibilities include: periodicals check-in, provision of circulation services including operating computer systems to check materials in and out, shelving, inventorying, shelf reading, processing of library materials, binding, filing, typing, data entry, mail delivery, courier, answering telephones, providing guidance, directions, answering questions, opening and closing of libraries during evening and on weekends, microcomputer consulting, and special projects.

Qualifications: Enrollment in a high school, college, or university at the secondary, undergraduate or graduate level. Office/public service experience highly desirable. Participation in the College Work Study Program highly desirable.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: Ability, willingness to work evenings and/or weekends. Knowledge of and familiarity with computer software applications and systems highly desirable. Ability to maintain schedules in a consistent manner. Ability to work with faculty, staff, other patrons in a public service environment. Accuracy and attention to detail required.

Salary: Adjusted annually in accordance with University Student Wage Scale.

Hours of work: Hours of work are arranged around student schedules. Approximately 10-15 hours per week are arranged. Hours may vary and/or increase during periods when classes are not in session or during official University break periods.
