Graduate Student Job Description

Introduction: The Purdue University Libraries consists of 14 school and departmental libraries and the Hicks Undergraduate Library which serves the University and the public at large. Resources of the libraries consist of a print collection of more than 2,200,000 volumes and 2,000,000 microforms. The libraries receive approximately 20,000 serial titles including periodicals and serial publications of societies, institutions, and the federal and state governments. Resources are supplemented by the 3,000,000 items of research materials held by the Center for Research Libraries in Chicago. The library collections and services of the Big Ten libraries, the University of Chicago, Ball State University, and Indiana State University are also available.

Staff totals more than 200, including 60 faculty and professionals, plus over 265 student support positions who assist in collection development, collection acquisitions, collection maintenance, collection access, public service activities and special projects.

Responsibilities: Provide administrative or para-professional support to the Libraries Faculty. May assist in providing evening and or weekend reference services to Library patrons. May provide assistance in other related areas such as bibliographic instruction, development of specialized library instruction programs, development and enhancement of computerized special projects.

Requirements: Enrolled and registered in a Graduate Program. Public service interest and skills. Computer literacy, highly desirable. Demonstrated communication skills.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: Ability, willingness to work evenings and/or weekends. Knowledge of and familiarity with computer software applications and systems highly desirable. Ability to maintain schedules in a consistent manner. Ability to work with faculty, staff, other patrons in a public service environment. Accuracy and attention to detail required.

Level of Appointment: 0090A12. Fiscal Year appointment as Graduate Student Administrative and Professional. (1/4 or 1/2 time)

Salary: Adjusted annually in accordance with University Student Wage Scale.

Hours of work: Either 10 or 20 hours per week are scheduled to include evening and/or weekends. Hours may vary during periods when classes are not in session or during official University break periods.
