SciFinder Scholar is the academic version of the SciFinder desktop research tool. It is used to locate and process information on a wide variety of chemistry and chemistry-related topics. It retrieves information contained in databases produced by Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS):
- CAplus (1907 to Present),
- CAS Registry (substance database),
- CASREACT (Reaction database);
- CHEMCATS (commercial sources for chemicals);
- CHEMLIST (information on Regulated Chemicals);
- Biomedical Literature (Medline)
SciFinder Scholar is updated daily. All citations are in English.
The information that you can search and view may include:
- Chemical Substance Information:
Chemical Names; CAS Registry Numbers; Chemical Structure Diagrams for substances; Chemical Structure Diagrams for reactions; Bio sequence Information; A list of other publicly available databases available from CAS's STN International on-line service, where additional information related to the substance may be located;- Document Information:
Title; Author; Company name/Corporate Source; Publication Year; Source, Publication, date, Publisher, Volume, Issue, Pagination, CODEN, ISSN; Abstract of the Article; Indexing; Supplementary Terms;- Patent Identification for Patents Abstracted by CAS: Patent Information; Application information; Priority information.
Who can use SciFinder Scholar?
Purdue University has subscribed to SciFinder Scholar Full Access for up to six simultaneous users.
Current Purdue University students, faculty and staff can access SciFinder Scholar from Purdue University computers that have the necessary software installed.

Hardware and Software Requirements
Note: All Purdue Libraries computers and ITaP computers have been configured to provide access to SciFinder Scholar. The instructions below are for those who wish to have access in their office or home computers. Mac users MUST download the Primary ICA Client for access.
>> Windows
- Download Primary ICA client software.
- If you don't need to print or safe information, you don't need to load any software onto your desktop; you'll be able to use your browser's Java Client.
>> Macintosh
- Download the Primary ICA client.
How to connect to SciFinder Scholar?
- Recommended Method once you have the ICA client installed on your computer:
- Go to Purdue University Libraries' EResources page (URL: http://gemini.lib.purdue.edu/eresource/result2.cfm).
- Click the link for SciFinder Scholar.
- On the "Authentication Required" page, type in your last name and Purdue ID # .
- Choose the printer (your desk side printer or one in a library)
- Wait for the connection to be established.
- Alternative method to access SciFinder Scholar: using JAVA client
- You will lose the ability to save to your local computer and print to your local printer.
NOTE: Because SciFinder Scholar has become very popular, sometimes you may not get through. Just try at a later time.
