To celebrate GIS Day this week, Thursday the 17th, we have two events in the community. Please attend, and please pass this along. The Tippecanoe County GIS Department, under Mark Ehle, is hosting posters from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM in the county office building downtown. He will welcome GIS project posters from the Purdue community. If you have used GIS data from the county in your research, a poster about any aspect of your work would be especially welcome because elected officials will be viewing these posters, and may be very interested to learn how the county GIS data is utilized. The Tippecanoe Room is in the County Office Building at 20 North 3rd Street, adjacent to the courthouse. This would be a great time to stop by and chat with Mark about the new Pictometry data for the county.

Something Larry Theller discovered as a way to speed up ArcGIS in ITaP labs:

In the labs, with the default settings, most tools are simply glacial – 10 minutes to import a pair of small shapefiles into an empty geodatabase. When the workspace and scratch space locations are changed from the default ( which is set to be users home ITAP network drive, my documents folder) to a geodatabase on a local or flashdrive; we see an improvement of an order of magnitude. So the students need to open environment settings at the top level of ArcToolbox and change their scratch and work space to something local, then save their map so it will remember. Sadly this does not reset the default, which will remain a network drive. So if they open a new, blank map it will always need this action to be performed. This is good practice anywhere and always offers good management benefits to get the students to be cognizant of the place their data is get stored; but it seems to be absolutely required in the ITAP installs.

– thanks to Larry for his intrepidness

A message was sent to PurdueGIS-L in June 2011 asking for volunteers to take over the planning (with Libraries and GIS Librarian support) of Purdue’s GIS Day celebration. Organized in recent years by Asst. This despite loyal support from a handful of repeat volunteers.

Response to the email to PurdueGIS-L was less than “middling,” even, and therefore GIS Day at Purdue is being quietly pushed out to sea. Thanks to all who have sponsored and/or contributed to the event over the years, and we still hope to work toward cohering the Purdue geospatial community around some other effort.

Using New Census Data: A GIS-Centric Webinar Wednesday, May 25th, 2:00-3:00pm EDT WEBINAR IGIC Members: FREE Nonmembers: $20

ACS, 2010 redistricting data – what to use and when? The ACS (American Community Survey) just released 5-year estimates that provide us with detailed demographics down to the block group level. The 2010 redistricting data provides population by race and ethnicity and is used (almost solely) for drawing new legislative and congressional district boundaries. Carol Rogers, Governor’s Census Liaison and State Data Center Lead Partner at the IBRC (Indiana University) will reveal all to us about the statistical data and the mapping files that will be so critical to their use.

Another made it to a development stage – an examination of student housing tendencies among culturally diverse Purdue student populations, years 1903-1963. The Archival Theory student did a remarkable job of finding and collecting individual student residence records, and Libraries GIS geocoded these data and built a draft web application to deliver these data interactively.

GENERAL POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Under the direction of the GIS Specialist, the Libraries GIS Application Developer will apply knowledge of developing web and internet technologies, application development, and coding languages toward presenting geospatial data, maps, and associated, integrated information to library users in intuitive, modern web applications.

GIS support at Purdue University Libraries is fairly new, but demand is already great for ways in which geospatial data can be organized, integrated, and presented to constituents of both the Libraries and their collections as well as outward-facing campus projects beyond the Libraries. The web-based discovery, presentation, and integration of geospatial data (including those collected by the Libraries) is a fecund area of work, and much of the progress depends on the ability to build intuitive, modern web interfaces and services.

The Libraries GIS Application Developer will help identify and implement the best technologies for solutions and projects and development that are already being, or will be, investigated by the GIS Specialist and collaborators. This will include custom web coding (back end and GUI), consumption and possibly production of web services, and various, dynamic interactions with back end data stores (typically via their own APIs).

RESPONSIBILITIES:

…help select and implement web technologies that can best parley the mission of a project into a usable, public interface to geospatial information

…work independently on coding solutions to problems and questions posed by the GIS Specialist, within the context of larger projects and their intended users and outcomes

…perform related duties as required

REQUIRED SKILLS:

…experience, success with common web technologies such as php, ajax/jquery/json/etc., sql-based databases

…experience with modern web services and ideas such as linked data

…strong sense of design and usability (you don’t need to be a usability specialist, but should be web-savvy enough to know current trends in user experience and should know, for example, which of these two web mapping sites is better: MapUSA vs. GeoCommons)

DESIRED SKILLS:

…experience with geospatial data stores

…experience with or contribution to open source application development

*** ESIP Student Fellowship – Applications due April 21***

Hello,

I’m excited to share the Federation of Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP) Student Fellowship http://wiki.esipfed.org/index.php/ESIP_Student_Fellows . The ESIP Federation is a broad-based community comprising researchers and associated groups that produce, interpret and develop applications for Earth and environmental science data. It now includes more than 125 member organizations, including all NOAA, NASA and USGS Earth observing data centers, government research laboratories, research universities, education resource providers, technology developers, and various nonprofit and commercial enterprises.

Graduate students selected as ESIP Student Fellows will be interested in bridging the gap between informatics, technology and Earth Science and applying research to real-world problems. This fellowship provides students a chance to work closely with professionals in an interdisciplinary, cross-sector group on current Earth Science problems (collaboration areas http://wiki.esipfed.org/index.php/ESIP_Student_Fellows#ESIP_Collaboration_Areas ). The students will become engaged in their respective group as rapporteurs, documenting the work of the group on the monthly telecons and at the semi-annual meetings (Summer/Winter). As the student become more familiar with the group activities he or she may chose to tie in their own research to the group activities. Student Fellows will receive a stipend of $1000 plus travel expenses to the summer and winter ESIP meetings. For full details on the Fellowship see the website: http://wiki.esipfed.org/index.php/ESIP_Student_Fellows

Please forward this e-mail on to students you know that may be interested. For questions, please e-mail me at erinrobinson@esipfed.org.

Look forward to hearing from you!

We get a lot of requests for assistance with the ArcGIS suite. Often we can field these requests and help out. Other times it’s beyond our capabilities (we don’t really even use the software in house) and we have to submit a support ticket to Esri on your behalf. Most of the time, the question can be headed off at the pass, so to speak, with these notes and the FAQ that follows:

know that ArcGIS is expensive and intricately licensed

know that Purdue’s license allows installations only on Purdue-owned machines or faculty/staff personal machines under restrictive terms

know that this does NOT include students’ personal computers

know the terms of the license by reading either the lightweight, legible version or the full legal document

know what you’re requesting: Esri has a nice, easy table or you could consult the full functionality matrix (v10) (v9.3) so you know what “flavor” of the ArcGIS suite you need

know that we’ll expect you to have read the installation instructions file that accompanies the installer downloads (when applicable)

know that if you end up needing to request codes to authorize software, you’ll need to be specific about which flavor you’ve installed and which extensions you want

know that ArcGIS is pretty serious software and if you just need to poke around some spatial data there are open source alternatives that may be better options

How do I get ArcGIS/ArcView/etc.?

If you are Purdue faculty or staff, you can download installers from the Disc.Iso server (just search for your software title using the site you’re on – you’ll be linked out to the downloads when appropriate). You will authenticate using Career Account credentials.

Can students install ArcGIS/ArcView/etc. on their own computers?

Nope. Sorry, Purdue pays a lot for Esri software and to allow students full access would amount to a free-for-all. Your instructors can request one-year licenses for this purpose if you’re sure you need one of Esri’s desktop products.

Wait, I’m supposed to get “ArcView” – what’s this ArcEditor business?

Please consult this nice, easy table or you could consult the full functionality matrix (v10) (v9.3)

Please join us for this one hour webinar to learn how ENVI tools and ArcGIS® combine to create a powerful tool for disaster relief efforts. We will demonstrate how using DigitalGlobe’s Worldview-2 data with ENVI and ArcGIS provided valuable information to efficiently deliver aid following the Haiti earthquake. We will demonstrate how the analysis tools were created using ENVI and ArcGIS desktop, and how they can be deployed in a desktop or enterprise setting.

You will learn to:

· Perform a spectral analysis workflow in ENVI to extract man made features.

· Create a geoprocessing tool in ArcGIS that uses the ENVI workflow

· Publish the ENVI geoprocessing tool to ArcGIS Server.

· Run an ENVI process from an ArcGIS based web application.

georeferencing project - beautiful, unique historic topo and aerial maps of the Wabash River resurrected (almost literally) and made available to the public as legitimately spatial datasets

Some time in the late 1980s, Dr. Robert Miles, retired Purdue University Professor of Civil Engineering, found himself rifling through a Dumpster bin in Louisville, Kentucky. He was rescuing a set of historic atlases that had been unceremoniously thrown out and left for dead. Miles retrieved the unusually oversized monographs (~3×2′) and donated them to the Purdue Libraries Map Collection. The collection is additionally curious in that the maps published in this set represent an early success in the developmental history of using aerial photography to generate topographic maps. More about the history behind these maps and their source can be found on the original materials page.

In the summer of 2006, volunteers from the Wabash and Erie Canal Park scanned over 30 images and maps and returned those images as tif files to EAS on DVDs. Each orthophoto image was ~170MB, 400dpi, grayscale. The topos were scanned in color and ended up at ~550MB each.

They were “dumb” images at this point, however (no spatial information), and had to be georeferenced so they could be delivered from within (or to) a spatially-aware environment. This rectification was performed by Libraries GIS using either ArcGIS Desktop or QGIS (user choice), referencing against a number of known mapsets like the 2005 Indiana Orthophoto set and http://erg.usgs.gov/isb/pubs/factsheets/fs08801.html. The resulting files were saved out as geotiffs at ~300MB for the aerials and ~1.45GB for each topo. They were then overviewed (using gdaladdo), pyramided (using gdal_retile.py) then grouped in GeoServer instance.

This project has its own site (and map viewer) where more information is available.
