Burian, Ph.D., P.E.
Associate Professor
Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering
University of Utah, Salt Lake City, Utah

Green Infrastructure (GI) has recently emerged as a component to help achieve sustainable urban development. GI is defined as the integrated network of natural areas, urban landscapes, and water infrastructure in cities. It has evolved to take advantage of natural systems to meet stormwater management goals including reducing flood risk and improving water quality. Additional benefits of GI have been noted in environmental (e.g., greenhouse gas emissions, urban heat island), cultural, and social aspects of cities. Although these benefits have been noted, a quantitative study of the implications of municipal-scale implementation of GI practices on the water cycle, microclimate, and energy use has not been conducted. Moreover, planning and design tools to quantify the urban heat island benefits are limited and few studies have been performed to quantify the benefits across a range of climate regimes. This presentation will provide a brief overview of GI including low-water use landscapes, pervious concrete, bioretention structures, green roofs, and rainwater harvesting systems, an in-depth assessment of the direct impacts of GI on the water cycle, and a hypothetical analysis of the indirect impacts of municipal-scale GI implementation on urban microclimate and energy use.

Steven J. Burian is an Associate Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Utah, where he has taught hydrology, hydraulics, stormwater management, sustainable urban water engineering, sustainability practicum, watershed modeling, water management, and flood modeling since August 2003. He earned a B.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Notre Dame in 1993 and a M.S.E. in Environmental Engineering in 1995 and a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering in 1999 from The University of Alabama. Dr. Burian's research group contributes to the planning and engineering of sustainable and secure urban systems. He specializes in sustainable development and urban water infrastructure design, green infrastructure, flood modeling and consequence assessment, water-energy-climate interdependencies, and GIS and remote sensing applications in urban morphological analysis. Reporting on these various topics, Dr. Burian has authored or co-authored more than 30 peer-reviewed publications, more than 50 conference papers and project reports, and delivered several software packages and databases. He is a registered professional engineer in Utah.
ccmiller@purdue.eduMon, 09 Nov 2009 12:11:01 -0500http://www4.lib.purdue.edu/gis/index.php?fed=true&fedid=27640.423632 -86.917873Social Data and Social Networking: Connecting Social Science Communities across the Globehttp://www4.lib.purdue.edu/gis/index.php?fed=true&fedid=272Social Data and Social Networking:
Connecting Social Science Communities across the Globe
1-4 June 2010
Ithaca, NY, USA

IASSIST 2010, the 36th Annual Conference of the International
Association for Social Science Information Service and Technology
(IASSIST) will be hosted by the Cornell Institute for Social and
Economic Research (CISER) and Cornell University Library (CUL) and
will be held at Cornell University, in Ithaca, New York, USA, on 1-4
June 2010.

The theme of this year's conference is Social Data and Social
Networking: Connecting Social Science Communities across the Globe.
Social science has begun to feel the impact of the dramatic shift in
communication patterns globally, where social networking and other
digital media trends are changing how social scientists study the
world around them. It is important for current and future geoscientists to be aware of the arc of geoscience -- not just modeling and analysis, say, but the fuller picture of data acquisition, manipulation, documentation, visualization, and sharing.

This course (course #: EAS 59100) provides a fuller picture of how one finds and evaluates information, prepares and manipulates data, uses the tools of analysis and visualization (including GIS), and conducts their work so that data and information can be made reusable by the next scientist down the line. It is an holistic approach presented in a hands-on, project-driven course with opportunities to develop skills in visualization and analysis, using workflow management software to automate tasks, connecting technologies and data, and curating geospatial data so it is reusable by the scientific community.

The grading for the course will consist of laboratory work and a final project that ties together the concepts of the course. The focus of this class is on earth and atmospheric sciences, but it should also be of interest to any discipline using geospatial information for scientific analysis.

The course will take place in the very state-of-the-art LearnLab in the Management and Economics Library (Krannert -- more about this facility here: <a href="http://www.lib.purdue.edu/mel/renovation/melrenovation.html).
http://www.lib.purdue.edu/mel/renovation/melrenovation.html).<br />
For more information, see the course site (http://www.lib.purdue.edu/gis/geoinformatics/) and flyer or contact GIS Librarian Chris Miller.ccmiller@purdue.eduThu, 01 Oct 2009 17:45:54 -0400http://www4.lib.purdue.edu/gis/index.php?fed=true&fedid=26940.423787 -86.910765GIS4Lunch > GIS Day 2009http://www4.lib.purdue.edu/gis/index.php?fed=true&fedid=267Thanks again to all who attended last week's GIS4Lunch meeting and helped contribute to the discussion of GIS Day 2009. To summarize:

Sponsorship may not be as robust this year and will partially determine how many of the following ideas will be feasible. Anybody with ideas of offices, agencies, parties that might be inclined to help support this event (even modestly) should send a note to Libraries Marketing Associate Kayla Gregory (kgregory@purdue.edu)

We agreed to tentatively schedule our main GIS Day event on Monday, November 23, 2009, although if there are tangential events (workshops, e.g.) we will almost certainly hold those on surrounding dates.

We agreed to inquire about partnering with Tippecanoe County on a joint celebration (an email has already been sent to Mark Ehle).

The structure, tentatively:
+ a poster pitch session (~2 slides per poster, designed to summarize and generate interest in the poster)
+ poster session
+ presentations session (~10m per, with an emphasis not on deep methodology, but more generally on the project's goals, its technologies, any public-facing results or benefits)
? gallery of hands-on projects (i.e. line of boxes with project data/web apps loaded on them and some supporting material describing their use -- akin to or including the LDM kiosk)
? keynote (Jim Sparks? Other?)
?? lunch forum/panel (PU GIS/geo* personnel invite questions or address a list of pre-submitted questions about Purdue's services, current environment, strategic direction, etc.)

Possible topics for posters, presentations, or workshops:
overview of GIS activity on campus
update on 9.4 or other developments coming from powerhouse ESRI (possibly from an Indiana-based ESRI office)
workshops or overviews on open source technologies
web mapping/mashups
GIS on a mac
common GIS resources

Anybody is still welcome (and all encouraged) to offer suggestions about GIS Day 2009. Although the day is approaching, there is still room to offer advice. There is most certainly still room to volunteer with planning and programming as well, so please contact Chris Miller if you're interested.ccmiller@purdue.eduWed, 30 Sep 2009 10:16:31 -0400http://www4.lib.purdue.edu/gis/index.php?fed=true&fedid=26740.424539 -86.912627Geomatics Seminar -- Construction and Sustainable Infrastructure: Advanced Applications of Spatial and Information Technologieshttp://www4.lib.purdue.edu/gis/index.php?fed=true&fedid=2681:30pm, Thursday, Oct. 1, 2009
CIVL 2107

Construction and Sustainable Infrastructure: Advanced Applications of Spatial and Information Technologies
Hubo Cai, Ph.D., P.E., GISP, Assistant Professor
Division of Construction Engineering and Management, School of Civil Engineering

The nation’s civil infrastructure consists of transportation and communication systems, water and power lines, waste and wastewater treatment plants, and public institutions. These infrastructure systems are enormous in size and are facing a long list of problems: aging facilities, inferior performance, limited resources, and significant negative environmental impacts. The concept of infrastructure management emerged as a potential remedy, the overall goal of which is to allocate limited resources to achieve a safer, more efficient, and environmentally friendly infrastructure system.

The significance of this nation’s civil infrastructure problems has greatly motivated researchers and practitioners. New tools and technologies and their creative applications have emerged to solve conventional construction and infrastructure engineering problems and consequently, to assist in solving this infrastructure crisis. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are one of these spatial and information technologies and have a great potential. A wide range of GIS applications can be found to cover the whole life cycle of civil infrastructure systems from planning, to programming and budgeting, design, construction, operation and maintenance/repair/rehabilitation, and ending at demolition/disposal.

This seminar will be discussing applications of spatial and information technologies in civil infrastructure systems, based on both academic research projects and industrial engineering practice. The focus will be on GIS applications in civil infrastructure inventory, transportation infrastructure modeling, impacts from highway and bridge construction on traveling and traffic, interaction of civil infrastructure and floods, and environmental impact analysis and construction site runoff management, and the great potential of GIS in improving construction planning and management.

Bio:
Hubo Cai came to the United States from China in 1999, with a Bachelor’s degree from Tongji University. From August 1999 to May 2000, Cai was a graduate student at Iowa State University and later, he transferred to North Carolina State University. Cai received a Master of Civil Engineering and a PhD from North Carolina State University in 2001 and 2004, respectively, with a research focus on 3D spatial modeling and GIS applications in civil engineering. Upon graduation, Cai served as a GIS specialist with the GIS unit of the NC Department of Transportation. He joined URS as a GIS/Database Applications Developer in June 2004. The best explanation she has found
comes from
the USGS - <a href="http://egsc.usgs.gov/isb/pubs/booklets/elvadist/elvadist.html
http://egsc.usgs.gov/isb/pubs/booklets/elvadist/elvadist.html<br /> According to this source it looks like the point is 14 miles north-
northwest of Indianapolis
in Boone County. But here are some other answers...
http://www.netstate.com/states/geography/in_geography.htm - which
states that the center is actually in northern Marion County
http://www.usgs.gov/state/state.asp?State=IN - another USGS source
putting the center in Boone County
<a href="http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/02/07/national/main3800964.shtml
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/02/07/national/main3800964.shtml<br /> - lists it in Marion County
So which is correct? Maybe both or maybe none - depending on the
definition and method you use to calculate Indiana's geographic
center. So can our GIS community propose a reasonable [and useful]
definition of Indiana's geographic center and then, can we find
accurate coordinates for this location?

Have a great weekend!

Thanks,

Phil

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Phil Worrall, Executive Director
Indiana Geographic Information Council
140 N. The course is free to all participants. However, any travel
expenses will be the responsibility of the participant. Details about
the course as well course registration information can be found at <a href="http://www.polis.iupui.edu/Training/Default.aspx
http://www.polis.iupui.edu/Training/Default.aspx<br /> . The space in this course is extremely limited, so please sign up
at your earliest convenience if you are interested. Also, because
there is likely to be considerable interest, we ask that you do not
sign up unless you are certain of your ability to attend.
The course description is as follows:
This course focuses on the HAZUS-MH inventory. It is recommended for
GIS analysts, database administrators, and others who will be
responsible for migrating local data into the HAZUS-MH database
structure. This course provides an overview of the methodologies that
were used to develop and compile the HAZUS-MH provided inventory.
However, emphasis is placed on the use of the Comprehensive Data
Management System (CDMS) and other tools developed by FEMA for HAZUS-
MH users interested in improving the accuracy of hazard loss
estimations by integrating local data into the HAZUS-MH analysis
process. Numerous hands-on exercises will empower participants with
the skills to use CDMS as well as other tools to update both HAZUS-MH
state geodatabases and study regions. The course will also help
participants effectively prepare for their own data updating projects
by identifying those inventory elements that have the most impact on
the estimation of losses for flood, earthquake, and hurricane events.
This course qualifies for the FEMA HAZUS Trained Professional and
HAZUS Trained Practitioner certificate programs. Information about
these programs is available on the FEMA Website.
Prerequisites: Participants in this course must complete the Basic
HAZUS-MH course and have skills equivalent to those taught in the
Introduction to ArcGIS for Emergency Managers course. It is being developed at Purdue University by a
multidisciplinary team of faculty and students of Communication.
The main Visible Past aim is to enhance research, classroom, and
museum learning by harnessing the implicit space and time attributes
of information while at the same time fully embracing the read/write
ethic. We intend for the platform to validate and extend a theoretical
framework for humanities research and learning. We aim to establish a
set of methodological tools for virtual reality, location-sensitive
research and learning that can be extended to other environments and,
indeed, other disciplines.
