Government Documents on 19th Century U.S. History
A variety of materials produced by U.S. Government agencies documenting the growth and traumas of the United States during the 19th century are available in Purdue University Libraries. Most of these materials are in the HSSE Library and cover topics as diverse as the Civil War, Reconstruction, scientific research and exploring expeditions sponsored by the federal government, laws and legislation, foreign policy, economic growth, criminal justice, and a variety of other topics. Many of these publications are classified using the Superintendent of Documents (SuDoc) classification system while some are classified using the Dewey Decimal classification system. Some resources are accessible on THOR but many are not and require the use of some of the indexes listed below. In addition, a number of historical documents from the 19th century have been digitized and are available on the websites of some government organizations and in web-based products produced by commercial publishers.
