Background Notes-State Department reference resource featuring information on countries around the world and the status of U.S. relations with those countries.

International Information Programs-Features information resources on U.S. foreign policy and how this policy is communicated internationally. Site also features information about U.S. culture, economy, government, and history.

Consumer Safety

Travel Advisories-Produced by the State Department's Bureau of Consular Affairs, this resource provides information on travel and security conditions in those countries placing particular emphasis on conditions that could be dangerous for Americans in those countries.

Federal Grants

Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance-Resource providing one stop access to grants produced by U.S. Government agencies.

Laws, Regulations, and Court Decisions

GPO Access-Access point for U.S. Government legal, legislative, and regulatory resources such as the U.S. Code, congressional bills and committee reports on legislation, and the Code of Federal Regulations. Federal laws and regulations on foreign policy will be in Title 22 of the U.S. Code and Code of Federal Regulations.

House of Representatives International Relations Committee-Committee responsible for funding and conducting oversight of U.S. foreign policy programs. Indiana Representatives Dan Burton and Mike Pence are members of this committee during the 110th Congress (2007-2008).

Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe-This joint congressional and executive branch agency is responsible for monitoring compliance with 1976 Helsinki Act commitments concering European democratization and human rights.

Senate Foreign Relations Committee-Senate committee charged with funding and overseeing U.S. foreign policy programs, ratifying treaties, and beginning the confirmation process for the nominations of the Secretary of State and U.S. ambassadors to foreign countries. Senator Richard Lugar is the ranking member for this committee during the 110th Congress (2007-2008).

Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs-Office seeking to promote enhanced understanding between the U.S. and other countries through programs such as Fulbright Scholarships.

Bureau of International Organization Affairs-State Department organization responsible for U.S. interaction with international government organizations such as the United Nations and International Monetary Fund.

Bureau of Nonproliferation-State Department entity responsible for preventing the proliferation of mass destruction weapons such as biological, chemical, and nuclear weapons.

Bureau of Oceans, International Environmental, and Scientific Affairs-Office responsible for U.S. foreign policy on topics as diverse as AIDS, climate change, environmental protection, and fisheries.

Commission For Assistance to a Free Cuba-2004 federal commission consisting of representatives from Cabinet-level departments that produced a report containing recommendations for facilitating Cuba's political, economic, and social transition to a democracy.

Congressional-Executive Commission on China-Organization responsible for monitoring human rights developments and the rule of law in China.

Congressional Research Service Reports-These Library of Congress Congressional Research Service reports provide objective overviews of U.S. foreign policy issues for members of Congress. This site is hosted by the State Department's Foreign Press Center. This site is hosted by the University of North Texas Library.

Government Accountability Office-This congressional support agency evaluates the performance of government programs for Congress and issues numerous reports documenting the strengths and weaknesses of these programs.

Office of Inspector General-State Dept. office evaluating the performance efficiency of State Dept. programs and has the authority to investigate crimes committed against these programs.

Office of Public Affairs-State Department office responsible for promoting the importance of foreign policy to the American public.

Office of the Historian-Organization responsible for documenting the history of U.S. foreign policy with particular emphasis on the documentary series Foreign Relations of the United States. More detailed historical volumes of this series are provided here by the University of Wisconsin-Madison Library.

U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID)-Independent U.S. Government agency responsible for administering and implementing U.S. foreign assistance programs.

U.S. Institute of Peace-Independent U.S. Government agency promoting the peaceful resolution of international
disputes and conducting research on various international political, diplomatic, and security issues.

Statistics

Bureau of Resource Management-State Department entity responsible for budgetary management and whose site features information on the department's congressional budget request.

USAID Humanitarian Assistance Programs-Provides statistical information on U.S. assistance programs.

Foreign Aid in the National Interest-USAID publication providing statistical information and support for U.S. foreign assistance programs.

Overseas Private Investment Corporation-This independent U.S. Government agency assists U.S. business investments overseas and facilitates economic development in foreign countries. Its website has a numer of statistical resources.
