Have you been disturbed in the HSSE Library by all that banging and clanking coming from the attic? It certainly is disruptive, but it is music to our ears, as the HSSE library will be expanded for the first time in nearly 50 years. The attic of Stewart Center is being renovated for Archives and Special Collections and HSSE expansion. We will be adding 1,420 shelves or space for about 35,000 books; this will increase the HSSE book space by 6-7%.
This new space is designed to be the quietest space in HSSE; we might even call it the "Writer's Room." Furniture has been selected to encourage individual research rather than group study space. The workstations will include tables with lamps, individual carrels, and comfortable chairs with laptop arms. Every station will have electrical outlets for laptops, and the wireless network will be available. There will be lockers so users can leave their books, notes and laptops in the library.
Here is a floor plan of what to expect. Move in date may be as early as October 2008.
