Selected Purdue Libraries Databases for Sociology

  • Sociological Abstracts: abstracts and indexes the international literature in sociology and related disciplines in the social and behavioral sciences. The database provides abstracts of journal articles and citations to book reviews drawn from over 1,800 journals, and also provides abstracts of books, book chapters, dissertations, and conference papers. Records added after 1974 contain in-depth and nonevaluative abstracts of journal articles.
  • Academic Search Elite: (General database with some major Sociology journals)Provides access to articles from journals, magazines, and newspapers in a wide range of subject areas. Features abstracts and indexes for over 3000 publications, approximately 1700 are peer-reviewed journals. Over 1200 publications are available in full text. The coverage is from 1984 to present; with fulltext articles from1990 to present.
  • AgeLine: is a bibliographic database in social gerontology--the study of aging in social, psychological, health-related and economic contexts. It is produced by the American Association of Retired Persons, covering more than 300 journals.Over 31,600 records with abstracts)
  • America: History and Life: Abstracts of selected journal articles, citations of book and media reviews, and dissertations covering the history of what is now the United States and Canada for all time periods. Covers over 2,000 journals published worldwide. All abstracts are in English. Every year about 16,000 new entries are added. Includes some 6,000 citations of book and media reviews.
  • American Periodicals Series online: over 1,240 American magazines and journals that began publishing between 1740 and 1900, including general magazines, literary and professional journals, and other historically-significant periodicals. For periodicals that continued into the 20th c., the cut-off date is 1940.
  • American History and Culture Online: Sabin Americana, 1500-1926 is the correct title for this database ["Sabin Americana Collection"]: searchable full-text of works about the Americas published throughout the world from 1500 to the early 1900's. Included are books, pamphlets and other documents about North, Central and South America, including accounts of exploration, trade, colonialism, Native Americans, and much more. Based on Joseph Sabin's Bibliotheca Americana.
  • Directory of Published Proceedings: DoPP provides information on locating and procuring published proceedings from conferences in many fields, including sciences, medicine, ecology, and humanities.
  • Environmental Law Reporter: the Environmental Law Reporter® Online is a currently updated environmental database that includes court decisions, statutes, treaties, regulations, and articles.
  • Anthropology Plus: indexes over 2500 journals in social, cultural, physical, biological, and linguistic anthropology, ethnology, archaeology, folklore, and interdisciplinary studies.
  • Black Studies Center: fully cross-searchable combination of three resources: Schomburg Studies on the Black Experience, International Index to Black Periodicals (IIBP), and The Chicago Defender (1935-1975).
  • Child Abuse, Child Welfare and Adoption: documents database contains over 31,600 bibliographic citations and abstracts of professional literature, primarily of U.S. origin. Publication types include books, journals, government reports, conference papers, state annual reports, legislation, curricula, and unpublished papers available from the clearinghouse.
  • Family & Society Studies Database:
    (1970 - present) is the world's most comprehensive, systematic, and non-evaluative resource of research, policy, and practice literature in the fields of Family Science, Human Ecology, Human Development and Social Welfare. FSSW provides over 611,700+ abstracts and bibliographic records drawn from over two thousand professional journals, books, popular literature, conference papers, government reports, and other sources, many of which are indexed exclusively in FSSW. Approximately 10,000 abstracts are added each year.
  • HAPI: Hispanic American Periodicals Index Online: is the source for authoritative, worldwide information about Central and South America, Mexico, the Caribbean basin, the United States-Mexico border region, and Hispanics in the United States. From analyses of current political, economic, and social issues to unique coverage of Latin American arts and letters, HAPI Online contains complete bibliographic citations to articles, book reviews, documents, original literary works, and other materials appearing in more than 500 key social science and humanities journals published throughout the world. Many of the citations are linked to full text.
  • Index Islamicus: Indexes literature on Islam, the Middle East and the Muslim world. Over 3,000 journals are monitored for inclusion in the database, together with conference proceedings, monographs, multi-authored works and book reviews.
  • International Index to Black Periodicals: includes current and retrospective bibliographic citations and abstracts from over 150 scholarly and popular journals, newspapers and newsletters from the United States, Africa and the Caribbean--and full-text coverage of over 40 core Black Studies periodicals (1998 forward).
  • MasterFILE Premier: (General database with some major Sociology journals)Provides access to articles from nearly 2800 general magazines and periodicals. Over 1800 publications are available in full text. The coverage ranges from 1984 to present; with fulltext access ranging from 1990 to present.
  • Matter of Fact: contains statements reflecting current public policy issues. The database does not display raw numbers in tables and charts; rather it presents the data selected by writers and speakers to influence others, and presents the statistically supported arguments in their own words. Approximately 25 percent of the excerpts are derived from congressional hearings, another 15 percent from the Congressional Record, and the remaining excerpts from both general interest and specialized periodicals, newsletters, and newspapers.
  • OmniFile Full Text Mega: (General database with some major Sociology journals. Combines the Social Sciences Abstracts and the Humanities Abstracts with other databases)This database provides cover-to-cover indexing for 492 key international English language periodicals in the Social Sciences and 500 English language periodicals in the Humanities. Material include articles, review articles, scholarly replies to the literature, interviews, obituaries, and biographies in the fields of anthropology, economics, geography, international relations, political science, psychology, sociology, archaeology and classical studies, art and photography, folklore, history, journalism and communications, language and literature, literary and political criticism, music and performing arts, philosophy, and religion and theology. It is updated weekly with coverage from 1983 to the present. Abstracting begins with material in 1994.
  • ProQuest Research Library: (General database with some major Sociology journals)A general database of magazine, journal, and newspaper articles from approximately 2350 publications in a wide variety of subject areas. The database consists of two components: a core list of about 740 periodicals, and 15 subject-specific modules in the areas of Arts, Business, Children, Education, General Interest, Health, Humanities, International, Law, Military, Multicultural, Psychology, Sciences, Social Sciences, and Women's Interests. Any combination of modules may be searched simultaneously. Searches may be limited to only peer reviewed titles or only newspapers. Many articles are available in full-text, full image format. The coverage begins in 1986.
  • PsycINFO: is the comprehensive international bibliographic database of psychology. It contains citations and summaries of peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, books, dissertations, and technical reports, all in the field of psychology and the psychological aspects of related disciplines, such as medicine, psychiatry, nursing, sociology, education, pharmacology, physiology, linguistics, anthropology, business, and law. Journal coverage, spanning 1872 to present, includes international material selected from more than 1,900 periodicals written in over 35 languages. Current chapter and book coverage includes worldwide English-language material published from 1987 to present.
  • Web of Science: Web of Science includes Arts & Humanities Citation Index, Science Citation Index Expanded, and Social Sciences Citation Index. Collectively, these indexes cover 8,700 scholarly and technical journals completely and 13,300 selectively, in more than 230 disciplines. The Web of Science gateway allows searching the indexes singly or in combination. Features include cited reference searching, access to records related to a particular article, and number of times an article has been cited. Coverage extends back to 1977.
  • Women and Social Movements in the US 1600-2000: books, letters, images, scholarly essays, commentaries, and bibliographies documenting American women’s reform activities from the colonial period into the 20th century. 
  • Women’s Studies International: covers the core disciplines in Women’s Studies to the latest scholarship in feminist research. It also supports curriculum development in the areas of sociology, history, political science & economy, public policy, international relations, arts & humanities, business and education. Nearly 800 essential sources include: journals, newspapers, newsletters, bulletins, books, book chapters, proceedings, reports, theses, dissertations, NGO studies, important websites & web documents, and grey literature. Over 2,000 periodical sources are represented.
  • Worldwide Political Science Abstracts: abstracts journals and other sources, including links to full text sites, in political science and related fields, including international relations, law, sociology, economics, and public administration/policy. The backfiles start from 1975 to the present.

  • American Religion Data Archive: The American Religion Data Archive (ARDA) acts to preserve quantitative data on American religion, to improve access to this data, to increase the use of the data, and to allow comparisons across data files. The ARDA collection includes data on churches and church membership, religious professionals, and religious groups (individuals, congregations and denominations).
