Saving and Importing PubMed Citations

Step 1

Search as usual.

Step 2

Mark records needed. Before going to next page of results, send the mark records to the Clipboard.

Step 3

Repeat for each page of results as necessary. You may collect up to 500 records in PubMed's Clipboard. Saved records in the Clipboard are lost after eight hours of inactivity.

Step 4

After all records are marked and saved to the Clipboard, go to the Clipboard to retrieve saved results.

Step 5

Change the Display to MedLine Format.

Step 6

Change to "Send to File".

The file will begin to automatically download to the hard drive on your computer as a .fcgi file format. Depending on how you have configured your browser, it will automatically download to your hard drive, open with a word processor program or ask how you want to handle the file.  Whether you choose to download it the your hard drive or to open in a word processing file, you need to change the .fcgi format to a .txt format by either renaming the file on your hard drive, or using the "save as" command in your word processing program to save the file as "text only" before importing it into EndNote.
