Large selection of international newspapers and business publications EDGAR (the Electronic Data Gathering, Analysis, and Retrieval system) performs automated collection, validation, indexing, acceptance, and forwarding of submissions by companies and others who are required by law to file forms with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). As of 6 May 1996, all public domestic companies are required to make their filings on EDGAR with very limited exemptions. There are many other Internet sites which provide fee-based access to EDGAR filings and there are definitely some advantages to their value added searching capabilities. Nevertheless, the SEC site does provide free links to all filings since 1994. EDGAR filings are posted to the SEC site 24 hours after the date of filing. There are several other interesting features on the SEC site such as proposed and final SEC rulings, ticker symbol look-up, and mutual fund activity reports. The Hoover's electronic company information is as varied as are its print publications. Follow the "Search for company Information" icon to search for companies by name, ticker symbol, industry, location, and annual sales. This search retrieves what Hoover's calls a "Company Capsule" that includes basic company identification information and recent full-text news articles.
