10 Steps to Depositing Your Article in Purdue e-Pubs
Ideally, the decision to make an open access deposit of a scholarly article occurs before the publication agreement with the publisher is signed. When deciding where to publish your article, take the open repository policies of the publisher into account.
1. Research your publisher's copyright agreement at Sherpa/Romeo: www.sherpa.ac.uk/romeo
a. If SHERPA/RoMEO shows that the publisher version or PDF of the article is permissible under the standard agreement, then make sure this language appears in the publication agreement presented to you.
b. If SHERPA/RoMEO shows that the "postprint" is permissible in open repositories, this means that the final reviewed manuscript may be deposited. Again, ensure this language appears in the agreement presented to you.2. Strongly consider using the Purdue Faculty Senate approved copyright addendum when publishing your article (www.cic.net/Libraries/Library/authorsrights.sflb). The addendum should be signed by you and returned to the publisher along with the publishing agreement for your article. The addendum explicitly permits you to deposit the final PDF version of your article into open repositories as long as access is embargoed for 6 months. Purdue e-Pubs allows you to enter access embargoes.
