Campus-Based Publishing

Digital technologies are allowing scholars to communicate in new ways. Sometimes information is best communicated relatively informally (through technical reports or conference proceedings, for example), while in other contexts traditional, peer-reviewed publications (often in print as well as online) are most appropriate. Recognizing the diversity of publishing needs on campus, Purdue Libraries provides a range of publishing support services to Purdue faculty, staff, and students. Faculty liaison librarians are the best first point of contact and can provide introductions to the Digital Collections Librarian, responsible for Purdue e-Pubs, or the Director of Purdue University Press as appropriate. They can also be contacted directly. Often, both library and press staff will be involved in providing a solution, taking advantage of a range of information science expertise and infrastructure. All publishing solutions offered by Purdue Libraries share a commitment to respecting author rights while maximizing access to scholarly information, and operate on a variety of business models, from departmental subsidies to subscriptions and sales.

Purdue University Press

Established in 1960, Purdue University Press is the scholarly publishing arm of the university. While the Press develops a publishing program in certain core subject areas that includes authors from many different institutions (and from outside academia), it also exists to provide publishing services to Purdue faculty, staff, and students. In some cases, these result in books and journals formally published under the “Purdue University Press” imprint that communicates a strong level of peer-review and editorial intervention. In other cases, projects are “supported by Purdue University Press.” In these cases, the Press provides expert services such as copyediting, design, distribution, and marketing, but the product does not appear under the Press’s imprint. e-Pubs

Click here for 10 steps to depositing your article in Purdue e-Pubs.

Original series of technical reports, working papers, white papers, symposia and conference proceedings, and more may be hosted online and digitally preserved for departments, research centers, labs, and other Purdue campus constituencies. Departments and centers may also choose to establish collections of published articles affiliated with their units, and to these groups Purdue library publishing services provide a full-featured scholarly communication package. The Libraries can use your branded identity, logo and more, to provide a library-powered online home for all of the publications associated with your group. Documents in Purdue e-Pubs are freely available (and free of charge to use) on the open web, providing scholars without subscriptions the opportunity to access affiliated reports through Google Scholar and other academic search tools. And just as with our other digital services, Purdue e-Pubs delivers monthly download reports to individual authors as well as aggregated reports to collection administrators. Contact: Mark Newton
