Caripito

Caripito

June 3, 1937

As the pilot approached Caripito she followed a muddy river that wound through the mountain pass like a reddish brown snake crawling about tightly packed greenery. A few miles inland lay the red roofed town of Caripito with squat oil tanks on the outskirts. This setting was home to a splendid airfield with paved runways and a well-equipped hangar. The elapsed time from San Juan (750 miles) to Caripito was 4 hours 32 minutes. At Caripito, Earhart met the President of the State of Managas, Don Andres Rolando, and Secretary General, Don Ramiro Rendiles. Their wives accompanied both of the dignitaries. E. Henry Linan, General Manger of Standard Oil Co. of Venezuela, hosted Noonan and Earhart.
