At Tucson a dense sandstorm blocked the departure. They took off and leapfrogged over El Paso. It seemed like a solid mass of sand billowed above the ground, turning the air below the plane into a turbulent yellow sea. They reached New Orleans that night, and on Sunday morning, May 23, headed southeastward for Miami.
