On June 18th Amelia took off from a water-logged runway at Calcutta's Dum Dum Airport. The Electra barely cleared the trees at the end of the runway. The monsoon rains were very heavy and beat against the plane as they crossed the Bay of Bengal and headed for Rangoon, Burma. Although they tried to reach Rangoon, only 300 miles away from Calcutta, the rains were too severe and they had to land at Akyab (Sittwe) on the western coast. Later in the day they tried to reach Rangoon, but failed. Noonan was reported to have said "two hours and six minutes of going nowhere."
