Introduction
Purdue Libraries is now providing RSS feeds (Really Simple Syndication) for several services. RSS provides daily lists of all new items added to the e-Archives service, news articles relating to the Libraries GIS service and recent additions to e-Pubs. To subscribe to any of our feeds, see the feeds list at the bottom of the page.
What is RSS?
RSS is an acronym for Really Simple Syndication. RSS feeds are a way to share ("syndicate") frequently updated content with other web sites, news reader clients and modern web browsers. These programs gather (aggregate) RSS feeds so that users can select and read them at their own convenience. Users are in control!
Why use RSS?
- RSS is a fast and easy way to stay abreast of changes and news from web sites that you choose.
-
Once you have subscribed to an RSS feed you
don't have to continually check a site for updated information. Updates
are delivered to your desktop!
- Using an RSS feed rather than a listserv reduces mailbox clutter.
- RSS is ideal for tracking updated information. Other uses for it include following news headlines, event calendars, and blogs.
What do I need to use RSS?
- Using RSS is similar to using e-mail—you can either use a specialized client software or you may use a web site.
- You may download and install a specialized client to your computer. To find an RSS reader check the list at Yahoo! or Google.
- Another way to read feeds is to setup an account with a service that lets you track news feeds such as My Yahoo, Bloglines, and NewsGator.
- The easiest way may be to update your web browser to either Firefox or Internet Explorer. Both of them have built in RSS readers.
How do I sign up for an RSS feed?
- First, determine if the site offers an RSS feed. If you see an orange logo (sometimes they come in other colors) similar to one of these then the site will have an RSS feed.
- How you actually subscribe is dependent on the reader that you are using. Consult your documentation for specific information.
