UGRL Collections

Media Collection

The media collection includes audiocassettes, videocassettes, laserdiscs, DVDs, CD-ROMs, slides, 16mm films and more. The media collection is based on the instructional needs of faculty, instructors and extension specialists and is largely educational; some classic entertainment films are included mainly in support of film study courses. While holdings in humanities, education and social sciences make up the bulk of the collection, there are also a significant number of technology and agriculture titles. Media items are included in the Libraries Catalog and most media materials are available on open shelves in the Undergraduate Library.

Magazines and Newspapers

General interest magazines and some scholarly journals, as well as current editions of major American and international newspapers are housed in UGRL.

Current issues of our magazines are kept on the main floor in the Contemporary Literature room. Older issues have been bound in a hardback form, and are kept on the lower level in the Bookstall.

Contemporary Literature

The collection consists of American and British literature, including fiction and poetry, and translations of international titles. Though these titles are useful for academic study, they are often borrowed for personal enjoyment.

Course Reserves

Materials in the Course Reserves collection are held in an area behind the Circulation/Reserve desk. Most items are temporarily placed in this collection at the request of an instructor; thus holdings fluctuate over time. Reserve items can be checked out for use in the Undergraduate Library only for a limited loan period (usually two hours). A few designated items may be checked out for overnight loan or longer. All patrons may use Reserve items, but patrons with visitor privileges are restricted to in-library use.

In general, patrons may check out one item at a time. To facilitate copying, up to five items may be borrowed at one time for a 15 minute period. Copiers are available in the library.

Items that may be on reserve:

  • Library-owned materials
  • Photocopies of Articles
  • Personal copies
  • Class notes
  • Selected course textbooks

Reference Collection

Located near the Reference Desk in the Undergraduate library, the reference collection includes encyclopedias, dictionaries, indexes, atlases, sourcebooks, directories, and bibliographies. Reference materials are intended to assist patrons with their research and are for in-library use and limited checkout.
