Q: WHAT is a citation?
A: A description of the material (e. g., book/journal article/web site) you used in researching your case presentations.

Q: WHY cite my sources?
A:
For the purpose of case presentations, the reasons for citing are:

    to document (to support or back up your conclusions);
    to acknowledge or give credit to other authors, and
    to identify or describe the material so other students can find it quickly and easily.

Q: HOW should I cite different resources?
A: Some common resource citations would be:

    Books: include title, author, date of publication.  Also include the call number as a location aid.

    Examples:

    Morgan RV.  Handbook of small animal practice, 3rd ed. Philadelphia: Saunders, 1997.  636.7089 H1907 1997 (Reserves)

    Large animal internal medicine / Timothy H. Ogilvie, 1998.  636.0896 Og4L 1998 (Open Reserves)

    Journal articles: include article author(s) & title, journal title, date, volume, issue number, and page numbers

    Examples:

    Jones AB, Brown CD & Smith EF.  Canine hip dysplasia.  Journal of the American Animal Hospital Association 1998; 34 (2): 105 - 23.

    Gorrel-C.  Equine dentistry: evolution and structure.  Equine Veterinary Journal. 1997, 29 (3), 169 - 70.

    Internet web sites: it's helpful to include the URL and the date you visited the site, since its content may change.

    Examples:

    Violence to humans and animals: an important link.  American Humane Society web site.  At: http://www.amerhumane.org/children/factsheets/viol_link.htm.  Accessed 10/24/00.

    Dahlke, Julie.  A pet owner's guide to common small animal poisons.  American Veterinary Medical Association web site.  At: http://www.avma.org/careforanimals/animatedjourneys/livingwithpets/poisoninfo.asp.  Accessed 10/24/00.

Other material:

    Class Notes - e.g., Lecture notes, VM 400, 1999;
    Companies - e.g., Ralson Purina Help Line (1-800-000-0000) on 10/24/00;
