Getting the most out of your research time:
Searching multiple databases at once using MegaSearch
Time: 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm
Instructor:
Location: POTR B50 (Engr Libr Conf Rm)
Searching more than one library database at time streamlines the process of
searching, which is especially useful for interdisciplinary topics. This session
will demonstrate some of the unique functions of the system, and, since it is still
under development, explain some of the limitations of the new search engine as
well. You will learn when it is appropriate to use this resource, compared to
searching databases individually, and how to tailor the search to include the
databases most helpful to your topic.

Plagiarism - strategies to recognize and avoid it
Time: 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm
Instructor:
Location: POTR B50 (Engr Libr Conf Rm)
The Purdue University Academic Honesty policy states students will not
plagiarize. The penalties if caught can be quite harsh, and yet there seems
to be little time spent teaching students how to avoid plagiarizing.
Studies show much of what gets identified as plagiarism is frequently the
result of poor note taking and writing habits. Come learn about ways to
recognize when plagiarism has occurred (even if unintentional) and how to
avoid those bad habits and their consequences.

Location: Life Sciences Library - Main Floor Instructional Area
The Purdue University Libraries have established a service called e-Pubs, at the heart of which is a digital collection of research articles contributed by Purdue graduate students and faculty. Articles in e-Pubs become part of libraries’ permanent digital collection and find their way into Google Scholar search results and onto researchers’ desktops. In this session, the moderators will highlight some of the successful uses of this service. They will demonstrate the process of contributing an article to e-Pubs and will highlight a few of the tools that can help authors understand their options when contemplating how to maximize the online presence of their articles.

Are we living in the Digital Dark Ages? The lack of best practices and a framework for organizing, preserving, and publishing research data is resulting in valuable datasets becoming lost or discarded. Some funding agencies are beginning to require that researchers include a data management plan in their grant proposals. At many institutions, including Purdue, librarians are exploring their role in data curation. Why should you consider publishing your research data in a repository, and what are some issues and challenges to consider? Along with the topic of data curation, we will discuss Open Access using materials from SPARC and The Right to Research.
